Don’t pitch your tent in a valley or else you could easily be flooded which ruins the whole experience.You also should avoid sites adjacent to water (eg rivers lakes and canals) as there will be insects and maybe even rats.

Most state parks are open seasonal. Pennsylvania has three state parks that are open year round. These parks are Little Pine, Ole bull, and Promised Land. The cold might be a factor for some campers. On the up side, the state parks allows pets on premise as long as it is a dog, cat or small caged animal.

Another large attraction for campers is the elk ranges. This is state land that the elk are free to roam and graze about. An elk is much bigger then a deer. A typical male elk can reach a thousand pounds.

If hunting isn’t on the menu, but observing wildlife is you can visit an elk range. Elk are larger then deer and males can weigh up to a thousand pounds. You can drop by one of the ranges near your campsite.

There are three words that I never imagined I’d ever say in a single sentence : Vegas camping.  Somehow the terms just don’t seem to go together very well.  This is perhaps why I told my partner he was silly when he claimed that he prepared a Vegas camping trip last year.

When many of us consider visiting Vegas, campgrounds aren’t the very first thing that comes to mind.  With all the top Las Vegas hostels available, all of the casinos and shows, most of us never think of this as a destination even if we love being outside.  Yet, besides being one of the finest destinations for tourists who prefer to live the high life, Vegas is actually one of the top locations to enjoy outdoor life.  Vegas camping is truly top-quality.

Of course, Vegas camp grounds vary really significantly in quality, so you have got to do your analysis carefully.  Las Vegas camping is only actually a good idea if you’re there for something other than the nightlife, casinos and shows. By all means have a day or two in town but the main reason for camping should be the outdoor attractions that you will find in the area around your campsite. The truth is, if you want good Las Vegas camping at a reasonable price, you have to get well outside the town limits.  Otherwise, all you may find will be drive-in camping at way higher prices than you should have to pay.  The best Las Vegas camping is along one of the streams that flow thru the state of Nevada.  For example, you can kayak below the Hoover dam on the Colorado River.  There are lots of campgrounds in Las Vegas, but unless you’ve got a specific area in mind , or you want to combine a visit to “sin city” with a camping trip then there are miles better locations for you to take your holiday.

The rationale for this is that Las Vegas camping is a bit coarse.  The weather will invariably be exceedingly hot, and there is a lack of the cool shady wooded areas that the majority prefer on their camping trips.  This isn’t to claim that you should give up on Las Vegas camping.  It can provide its own rewards, but it isn’t for the faint of heart.  You would do far better camping up in the Northwest if you’re attempting to find a good first out of doors destination.

Spending day after day in the desert could be a really trying experience for a novice camper.  Las vegas camping, of course , requires some of the most careful preparations that you can imagine.  If you’re going to go into the desert to camp, you need to bring plenty of water, the right food, and the right clothing.  Keeping cool when doing Las Vegas camping is nearly a matter of survival.  If you don’t manage to do it, you’ll lose your strength quickly.  You can be marooned miles and miles from civilization.  Things can get extraordinarily dark very quickly in the desert, so be forewarned and be prepared.  Some may suggest that you wear long sleeves and relaxed fit slacks to keep the sun off your skin, you may want to put that recommendation aside.  The 1st day of our Las Vegas camping adventure was truly uncomfortable particularly since I was dressed from head to toes.

Wear shorts and a t-shirt.  Trust me.  You can expect to do lots of walking in the Vegas camping trip and you really want to keep cool.  Or you might find yourself feeling exhausted and uncomfortable.

If you have ever hiked over 20 miles in a day with a backpack on your back you’ll probably be aware of how weight soon becomes a very significant factor. Experienced backpackers know that to reduce weight you need to concentrate on the three main items: the shelter, sleeping bag and the backpack itself.

So you will want to leave your huge 10 pound tent and snug 5 pound sleeping bag at home and get yourself the lightest backpack you can find.

You may find it hard to believe but there are some really good lightweight backpacks that weigh less than four ounces. This is no exaggeration. The typical capacity for a bag like this will be between about 1500 and 2000 cubic inches which is more than enough space for about 15 pounds of equipment. This capacity should be enough for your lightweight sleeping bag, a tarpaulin for shelter and a few vital necessities including a first aid kit and some energy bars. And some water of course.

When packing your kit for a lightweight trek you’ll probably find that the water you need is the heaviest item in your backpack. You can reduce the amount of water that you need to carry with you by planning your route to take you via locations where you can refill.

One key benefit of going ultra lightweight is that much of the equipment is so much less expensive than the more robust, heavier duty items. You can even find some perfectly adequate lightweight backpacks, often sold as day sacks, in various bargain disount store costing only a few dollars. They can be a very simple in desgn with only a few, if any, external pockets. But they can be excellent for lightweight trekking.

If you are going lightweight it’s also worth considering your clothing. Forget your all weather outdoor clothing and instead go for an ultra lightweight rain and wind proof fold-up cagoule and some light weight sports shoes rather than heavy walking boots.

If you lighten your load by reducing your clothing weight, equipment and using a lightweight backpack you should find that a 20 mile hike is suddenly much easier to complete.
